Plot Summary:

Violet Sorrengail, at 20 years old, is all but expected to join the Scribe Quadrant where she would read and translate books and detail the history. Her mother, who also happens to be the Commanding General, has ordered Violet to join the Dragon Riders Quadrant instead, which is the elite of Navarre. Violet is smaller than everyone else and suffers from brittle bones and knows that dragons are not fond of bonding with fragile humans, they destroy them. For the first time in a long time, there are fewer Dragons willing to bond, and more cadets that are looking for a dragon, Violet has a target on her back because most cadets would rather kill her to better their bonding chances. Those that wouldn’t kill her for bonding, would kill her because of who her mother is. Xaden Riorson is the most powerful and mean Wing Leader of the Dragon Riders, and he hates Cadet Sorrengail for murdering his father. The war outside of Navarre grows scarier and more gruesome each day, the magic wards have begun to fail, and Violet learns that higher ups are not telling cadets everything.

Characters

The main character, Violet Sorrengail, goes through a large character development at Basgiath, the war-college she attends and hopes to become a dragon rider. The dragons are characters themselves, which is an appeal as well. There is an underlying love-story, ending friendships, death, and building friendships as well. The large and diverse characterizations creates an inclusive environment.

Setting

The novel is set in the fictional world of Navarre and Violet attends Basgiath War College. She goes through the trials and courses to become a dragon riders instead of joining the scribe faction that she was fated to join. The war college creates a gruesome and harrowing setting for this novel that pulls readers into the fantasy world as if they were there.

Adventure

Violet begins her journey to join the Dragon Rider faction by walking across a deadly parapet. There is violence, fighting, dragon battles, and death. There is constant action at Basgiath War College, and Violet finds herself in the center of it all. She is also learning what is wrong with the Magic Wards and how things may not be what they seem.
