Week 15 Prompt: Fiction Marketing

I will be starting a new job soon as a Media Specialist at a large high school, so this question excites me even more than normal because it is something that I have already been thinking about recently. The high school that I will be starting at has a very big collection, but has been weeding and is almost ready to start building up again. When touring the library, I noticed that some of the sections seemed a bit drab. Since my tour, I have been thinking of ways to jazz things up once I start.

My first idea is to do some simple displays. I didn’t notice any displays when looking around the library, so this was my initial thought. I am used to doing very big displays at the library in which I currently work, but I feel that I will be able to start out small and it will still be an improvement. I feel as though making themed, colorful displays will help catch the eye of the students who may be looking for something to read.

My second idea is to make reading lists/book lists for staff and students. The high school’s library has adult materials as well because it has recently become a shared branch with the local public library system, so I would like to create themed reading lists/book lists for a variety of levels and age groups. This would be an easy enough resource to handout/send out for students and staff to refer to when trying to find new reads.

My third idea is to create bookmarks. I think it would be fun to create a variety of bookmarks that get students and staff thinking. The bookmarks will have things such as would you rather, intriguing multiple choice questions, or quotes that relate to a specific book or genre. On the back of the bookmark, I will list information about the related book or genre so that they know that they can find it in the library if it sparks their interest. The library in which I currently work has stopped providing bookmarks, which seems like an absolute library crime if you ask me, so I am excited to hopefully get to incorporate them into my workload again.
